二、词义辨析：还有哪些词表示”希望”的含义呢?

desire, wish, hope, expect, want, long

这些动词都有“希望”之意。

desire语气较正式庄重，着重渴望的力量与热切，常含有强烈的意图和目的。

wish语气较弱，多指难于实现或不可能实现的愿望。

hope指对愿望实现有一定信心的希望。

expect通常指有很大程度的把握，但仍含有预料之意，或预计某事或某行动的发生。

want一般指所想要的东西是切望得到的东西，能弥补实际需要。

long语气强，指极殷切地盼望着，这种盼望侧重于很难或不可能得到的东西。有时也指一般愿望，但含一定感情色彩。

(2)if only同wish一样表示愿望，主要为难以实现的愿望。

1. The snow was soft and deep outside. If only he could get out to try his new sled. 外头的雪下得柔软又深厚，如果他能出去试试他的新雪橇该多好啊。

2. If only they would tell me what they've decided. 但愿他们能把决定告诉我。

(3)as if表示说话人对当时的情况表示怀疑，认为其不真实或极少概率发生。

3. He comported himself as if he had already been elected. 他表现出好像他已经当选了似的。

5. It seemed to his imagination as if all her sweetness and vitality had flown. 他觉得仿佛她的可爱和活力已全化为乌有了。

However, we generally use wish to talk about a present or past situation that we want to change, but understand that it can't.

Present wishes are wish + a past simple verb.

For example:
